Iowa High School football fans have been Saved By(week) Zero. After what feels like an eternity of waiting, eight Class Eight-Player teams are set to begin practice today to officially kick off the 2025 Iowa High School football season.
While most schools around the Hawkeye State aren’t scheduled to have their first practice until next week, teams with Week Zero matchups can get an early start on things.
GoBound has four August 22 (Week 0) contests listed: Newell-Fonda at Boyer Valley, Griswold hosts East Mills, Stanton travels to Seymour, and Exira-Elk Horn-Kimballton takes on Sidney.
“Those four are Week 0 games due to the six team district (District 10) in southwest Iowa,” IHSAA Assistant Director Jared Chizek confirmed in an email with SportsGuysIowa last week.
Boyer Valley had the best 2024 record of the eight teams set to battle in Week 0. The school located in Dunlap finished 6-3 and edged Newell-Fonda on the road by a final tally of 28-22 on October 4 last year.
The Bulldogs lose some production from the graduated Owen Garside, who was the team’s leading passer and rusher, but appear set to insert junior Brody Koski into the starting lineup for more touches. Koski threw for 166 yards and four touchdowns in 2024 and ran for 252 yards and four more scores.
He also caught 10 passes for 83 yards and found the end zone once via the air, showing off his versatility, which can be used in many fashions in the fast-paced world of Eight- Player ball. Senior Levi Reineke and junior Tristen Burkhart had solid 2024 seasons and are listed on the 2025 roster as well, looking for increased roles, making Boyer Valley my Week 0 and Eight-Player District 10 team to watch out for this season.
