This week Chad Harberts caught up with Steve Brush, the Chief Marshall of the Drake Relays on his show. Steve Brush has a long history with the Drake Relays, beginning with attending in junior high, running in high school, and then starting as a marshall in 1993, making this his 33rd year officiating.
Steve has a passion for track and field began with the annual trip to the relays in junior high, and then became an official after his father, who had been an official since the mid-70s, suggested it.
Drake Relays is one of the Premier Track and Field Events in America
The Drake Relays are one of the great track and field meets in America, which is sometimes taken for granted locally in Iowa. The meet attracts high school, middle school, collegiate, and world-class athletes, including those who compete in the Olympics and World Championships.
Many of the greats ran in Des Moines including Carl Lewis ran in the snow at the Drake Relays. Numerous elite athletes have competed at the Drake Relays, including Carl Lewis, Lolo Jones, Michael Johnson, and Jenny Simpson. The event is a draw for both national-level athletes and Iowa natives who have achieved elite status.
