Waukee Northwest Colin Rice news and update on how we will report Iowa High School commitments

Our team had a crazy first week of publishing our new SportsGuysIowa (SGI) content and making our website live for viewing. Thank you to everyone who had been reaching out on our content as the readership in week one was amazing.

Our team got some big commitment news our first week with Colin Rice’s (Waukee Northwest Wolves) announcement that he will play basketball for Ames High School and Iowa State legend Fred Hoiberg at Nebraska in 2026. (commitment announcement story published by @Tiptonedits on X)

This announcement was very personal for our SGI team as Colin, is family for many of the core SGI team. Plus, almost all of the non-family SGI team members have known Colin for many years, and we are a close-knit bunch.

We had fun celebrating the announcement and are very excited for Colin, his family, and our SGI team. He worked countless hours in the gym, in AAU competitions with Martin Brothers, and on the high school court with the Wolves to achieve his goal.

With the transfer portal changing college basketball, earning a Power 4 Division One Scholarship in Basketball as a freshman is going to be a rare occurrence for Iowa Boys and Girls today and in the future.

One of our SGI editors Brandon Leonard (he is a big Hawkeye fan) had some tongue-in-cheek struggles with Colin’s announcement last week.

We will certainly write more about Waukee Northwest boys basketball (as they have a talented squad returning) this fall as the basketball season get’s closer. We will dive into more details as many interviews as we can with Colin and others on our podcasts and columns in the future.

At the Power 4 level there are many reporters and websites that have ample coverage of the Hawks, Cyclones, Panthers, and Bulldogs. I would recommend following the 24/7, On3, and the myriad of sites and reporters across the state that cover the high D1 level well.

Our SGI team will be writing about D1 high school athletes’ commitment announcements of course, but we will also concentrate on the commitments that the young women and men that make them to NAIA and Division 2 schools in the state to the best of our ability (including Dordt, Grandview, Upper Iowa, Briar Cliff, Northwestern College, Morningside, St. Ambrose, Waldorf, Clarke University, Mt. Mercy, and Drake Football).

This is the area we hope we can add some value and coverage for the hard-working athletes. So, we hope you will follow us on X @sportsguysiowa and tag us on Iowa High School athletes announcements to share with our readers.

As always, we appreciate your comments and support.
